Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies

The Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies (CRS) focuses on the art of communication, persuasion and critical thinking, training you to understand how messages shape people, culture and interpersonal relationships.

A Degree that Grows with You

CRS's undergraduate program takes a holistic approach, offering a liberal arts type of education in communication. We provide you with tools to think outside the box, communicate effectively in any situation to any audience and have keen insight into the world that surrounds you. This means that in today’s quickly evolving job market, impacted by a shifting economy and rapid technological development, a CRS degree gives you the skills employers are looking for: the ability to adapt, provide innovative leadership and integrate different skillsets at once.

Our graduate program emphasizes critical cultural studies and rhetorical studies, with additional foci in performance studies, language and social interaction, public memory and queer theory. We prepare graduates to be competitive candidates for doctoral programs and for a range of careers outside the academy.

A Vibrant History

We’re proud of our department’s long history at Syracuse University. Launched in 1910 as the Department of Oratory, CRS is one of the nation’s first academic programs devoted to the study of communication and rhetoric. Throughout our evolution, our department has been housed in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, where our programs have benefited from close association with the disciplines of art, art therapy, design, film and media arts, drama and music.
