Improving Air Travel Experience with Enough but Not Overwhelming Information

Topic/problem:

I chose this topic because I personally traveled domestically and internationally with unpleasant experiences. I enjoyed traveling a lot but there are a lot of aspects that can be improved. That’s how I started my research.

Resources show that nearly 500,000 people are flying at any given time. According to the statistics from Miami airport, 37,302,456 passengers (including both international and domestic passengers) either landed or took off at the Miami International Airport in the calendar year 2021. The incredible number of passengers specifies that air traveling and airports are becoming an extraordinarily vital part of transportation.

One of the biggest pain points for customers in bigger airports is navigation. Larger airports can be complex and confusing, and customers may struggle to find their way around. There is too much information in the airport, causing the travelers to frequently experience sensory overload at airports. Besides, study shows that the security check is also frustrating due to the policy difference and confusion of the information.

In the primary research including interviews and surveys, the results showed that around 60% of users check the flight status through the phone and think that knowing the congestion of the airport ahead of time can be really helpful. Interviewees mentioned that they experienced lost direction at the airport and got afraid of asking for help. Due to all the frustration, 62% of participants in the survey stated that they experienced anxiety or similar feelings when catching a flight.

With these factors in mind, how might we improve air travel experience by providing users enough but not overwhelming information?

Solution:

Triyo is an app that provides users with three major features: navigating through the airports, checking the flight status and airport busyness in real time, and checking if the items allowed for check-in/ luggage. Some sub functions include: booking or importing your flight information, saving favorite trips or routes, organizing your item lists for different types of trips, earning achievements to fulfill the satisfaction.

With the support from primary and secondary research, the solution focuses on the application design so that users can access the information whenever they need. Triyo utilizes augmented reality to help travelers navigate through the airport and collect information from airports and airlines to provide accurate information of the mapping and flights. In the future, Triyo intends to collaborate with TSA to provide more precise information on item policy for air travel.
