125 Years of Pride: The Syracuse University Marching Band

The College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Setnor School of Music invite you to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Syracuse University Marching Band, one of the nation’s oldest and most recognized collegiate marching bands and a defining symbol of Orange spirit.

History of the Syracuse University Marching Band

The Syracuse University Marching Band began in 1901, when 23 students gathered in Crouse College for their first rehearsal. That spring, they performed their first concert and later took the field for their first football game.

Although the band briefly disbanded in 1904, it was revived in 1907 and quickly became part of the University’s cultural identity, performing at games, convocations, concerts and major campus celebrations. By the mid-1920s, the band had partnered with the athletics department before ultimately joining what is now the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

The Origins of “The Pride of the Orange”

In 1970, the band embarked on a European tour, earning three awards at the World Band Festival in Kerkrade, Netherlands. When it returned for the fall football opener, the announcer introduced it as “The Pride of the Orange” for the first time—a name that remains synonymous with the band today.

Over the decades, the band has brought national attention to the University through major appearances, including the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (1971) and Super Bowl XLVIII (2014).

New York’s College Band: A Community of Students

Today, the Pride of the Orange is one of Syracuse University’s largest student organizations, with nearly 200 members from more than 80 academic majors across Syracuse University, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Le Moyne College, SUNY Oswego, and Onondaga Community College.

Known widely as New York’s College Band, the ensemble offers students leadership opportunities, lifelong friendships and a place to contribute to a vibrant, multi-institutional music community.
