Biography

Jason Aguirre is a New York-based, queer, Mexican-American director, bookwriter and choreographer specializing in new work development. His work merges physical and immersive theater elements to inspire imagination, spark curiosity and compel audiences to be skeptical of the status quo.

As a director and dramaturg, Aguirre has developed and presented work at Ars Nova, HERE Arts, Vineyard Theatre, Roundabout Theatre Company, Judson Arts, The Tank, Pete’s Candy Store and the Maker’s Ensemble. He is a SDCF Fellow, mentored by Susan Stroman; an alumnus of the Directors Group at Roundabout Theatre Company; a graduate of the George and Joy Abbott M.F.A. in musical theatre collaboration at Temple University; a recipient of Temple University’s Future Faculty Fellowship; the 2021 Artistic Producing Fellow at Vineyard Theatre; and recipient of the 2024 Boris Sagal Fellowship from Williamstown Theatre Festival.

As a writer, Aguirre is a member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop and a founding member of Theatre Now’s National Musical Writers Group. Musicals in development include “Sick Moves (Or the Dancing Plague Of 1518),” a pop/rock musical comedy reimagining the mysterious dancing plague; “Public Dominance,” an insurance pamphlet wrapped in a rom-com wrapped in a superhero movie; and “Branded,” a sci-fi musical dark comedy about social media tags and labels.

As an artistic leader, Aguirre is the founding co-artistic director of UNTITLED Musical Project, a not-for-profit dedicated to providing space for marginalized musical theater writers of BIPOC/Global Majority, LGBTQIA+/Queer and their intersecting identities to develop their work and engage in supporting and critiquing their colleagues’ work.

Aguirre is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild and an associate member of the Stage Directors and Choreographer Association.
