Li “Lily” Jiang

Biography

Li “Lily” Jiang is an assistant professor of fashion design in the School of Design.

Jiang previously served as a Ph.D. candidate and instructor at Iowa State University, teaching technical design processes, draping, styling and patternmaking. She also served as a research assistant at Iowa State in the College of Human Sciences and worked as a design intern at 3.1 Phillip Lim.

Jiang’s research focuses on utilizing innovative technology to promote sustainable design and development in the apparel industry. Her Ph.D. dissertation is titled “Interactive Technologies and Emotional Investment: A New Paradigm for Consumer Engagement in Fashion.” She has had 16 designs accepted and exhibited in national and international juried exhibitions, most recently the private collections “Motherhood: Fit Adjustable Nursing Underwear” and “Save the Coral” at the 2023 International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Annual Conference in Baltimore.

As a research assistant to Associate Professor Ling Zhang at Iowa State University, Jiang conducted research, created prototypes and conducted user testing for a fit-adjustable nursing bra, which resulted in the university’s first-ever apparel design patent.

Jiang’s numerous awards include the 2023 Joan M. Laughlin Fellowship: Outstanding Continuing Doctoral Student Award, presented at the ITAA Annual Conference; a 2023 Iowa State University Innovation Corps Program Minigrant; and the Best Artwork Award at the 2021 SFTI International Invited Fashion Exhibition in South Korea. She is a member of the ITAA (U.S.), for which she has served on committees and volunteered.
