“Bright Future,” a powerful short film directed and co-written by Jack Auger, a second-year student in the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ master of fine arts (M.F.A.) film program, has been named an official selection of the Austin Film Festival (AFF), one of the premier film festivals in the United States.

Created during Auger’s first year in the film program, “Bright Future” tackles the critical and timely subject of secondary trauma from sexual assault, examining its rippling effects beyond direct victims and challenging men to hold each other accountable. The film asks difficult questions about responsibility, healing and the lasting impact of sexual violence.

“I’m proud to have made this film with a wonderful team that all bought into its powerful message,” says Auger. “Thank you to my co-writer Hope Yohn, my fantastic cast and crew, and Syracuse University for providing us with the space to shape this film and providing us with the equipment to make it come to life.”

Auger’s film will be screened on Oct. 24 as part of the AFF’s Emotional Threads shorts program.

“Being selected for AFF is a significant achievement that puts Jack’s work in front of industry professionals, fellow artists and audiences who appreciate fearless, meaningful cinema,” says Alex Méndez Giner, associate professor and film program coordinator.
