The design studies bachelor of science (B.S.) degree is inherently forward-looking. It interrogates present-day challenges to shape what comes next. The degree prepares students for impactful roles as design futurists, equipping them with the skills to contribute to research and development teams, organizational and project management, collaborative projects and other professional contexts in design.

Emphasizing interdisciplinary learning, ethical considerations and a commitment to social impact, the program cultivates expertise in design research, critical discourse and innovative problem-solving.

Focusing on design as a field of inquiry rather than on specific technical training for design production,  students gain a deep understanding of design thinking, history, processes and industry contexts. Students are taught the skills to drive meaningful advancements, responsibly address complex design challenges, and guide the future of design as it responds to an ever-evolving world.

As one of our students, you will:

  • Explore design as research and discourse. Study design as a research-driven, interdisciplinary field, engaging with current trends and future directions in a global context.
  • Develop critical and ethical insight. Build expertise in design research, data analysis and critical thinking while addressing ethical considerations and the social, cultural and environmental impacts of design.
  • Integrate interdisciplinary knowledge. Broaden your understanding by synthesizing insights from other academic disciplines, enriching your approach to complex design challenges.
  • Communicate across diverse audiences. Cultivate skills to effectively communicate design concepts and research findings through written, visual and oral formats for varied audiences.
  • Engage globally. Expand your global perspective by examining design practices across cultures and participating in international study opportunities.

Program Highlights

Curriculum

The bachelor of science curriculum is built around a structured four-year sequence that moves students from foundational coursework through advanced research and original inquiry. Core courses span design history, design thinking, creative problem solving, collaborative design, project management, research methods and the social and technological dimensions of design. Each student's path is informed by a required minor of study that acts as a disciplinary specialization, complemented by a combination of academic and studio electives in design.

Global Study

You can participate in study abroad or study away programs through VPA or Syracuse Abroad. Design studies majors often choose to study at the Syracuse University campuses in Florence, Italy, or London, England, in the spring semester of their third year, and/or in Los Angeles via the VPA LA Semester program in the fall semester of their fourth year. Your advisor can discuss your options with you.

Career Exploration

In addition to the career exploration opportunities offered by their major, design studies students have access to career advisors and services through the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Office of Academic and Career Advising. The office connects VPA students with networking events, mentors and more.
