Sheena Hui

Biography

Sheena Hui is a pianist from Hong Kong. Her creative interests span the realms of performance, scholarship, style composition and teaching.

As a pianist, she has appeared at the Fontainebleau Conservatoire Américain in France, where she also made her conducting debut and won the Prix de la classe de langage musical d’Isabelle Duha en hommage à Nadia Boulanger. She also appeared at Porto Pianofest as an artist-in-residence. As a chamber musician, she has enjoyed sharing the stage with musicians such as YooJin Jang, Khanh-Nhi Luong, Logan Skelton and Heting Xia.

Hui is the founder and director of the Athenaeum Concert Series in Claremont, California, where musicians from diverse musical traditions are invited to perform and speak about how to listen to their music and why their music matters. She has presented interdisciplinary lecture-recitals on the music of Shostakovich, Scriabin and Beethoven, drawing from concepts in philosophy, literature and biology. She was previously involved in editing piano duet and duo works by Gershwin for the upcoming George & Ira Gershwin Critical Edition; her current research studies Alexander Borodin’s early output and aims to complete his unfinished Piano Trio.

As a pedagogue, Hui previously taught music theory and aural musicianship at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester. She has served on the piano faculty at the Palmetto International Piano Festival, Opus 1 Summerfest and Choir Camp!. She is currently director of the chamber ensembles program at the University of Rochester, instructor of music theory at Syracuse University and a piano teaching assistant to Ran Dank at Eastman, where she is completing graduate degrees in piano performance and music theory pedagogy.

Hui owes a debt of gratitude to her musical mentors Natalya Antonova, Ben Baker, Ran Dank, Matt Curlee and Logan Skelton for their roles in shaping her as a musician, pedagogue and human being.
