Biography

Christian Jones is a photographer from Charles City, Virginia. He received a B.F.A. from James Madison University and is currently pursuing an M.F.A. in photography at Syracuse University. As a fine artist, he has exhibited in Staunton, Virginia; Harrisonburg, Virginia; Syracuse, New York; and Richmond, Virginia.

Working across photography and painting, Jones explores the space where the two mediums converge. His photographic practice exists at the crossroads of historic processes and modern technology, utilizing alternative processes, film scanners, darkroom techniques and traditional lens-based methods. In parallel, his abstract painting practice informs his approach to image-making, emphasizing gesture, surface and materiality.

By bridging the gap between painting and photography, Jones treats the photograph not as a fixed record but as a mutable, living surface. His works often blur distinctions between captured image and constructed form, inviting viewers to consider photography as an object shaped as much by touch and process as by light. His work resists clean narratives, reflecting the unpredictable nature of mental struggle. Instead, it occupies a space between clarity and obscurity, where vulnerability is not resolved but sustained.
