Dougie Robbins

Biography

Dougie Robbins is delighted to serve the Department of Drama as part of the full-time dance faculty. A director and choreographer, they are originally from Cortland, New York—Central New York has always held a special place in their heart.

Some of their favorite experiences include assisting Broadway veteran Chet Walker on the 40th anniversary concert of “They’re Playing Our Song” at the Music Box Theater, as well as assisting him on the revival and preservation of Jack Cole technique. This experience led to Robbins’ time at Jacob’s Pillow and opened the door for them to teach at Steps On Broadway and Broadway Dance Center, where they continue to teach. Robbins is proud to have served on the faculty of the musical theatre B.F.A. program at SUNY Cortland and has taught at various other universities in guest and workshop capacities. Robbins has also been fortunate to teach, direct and choreograph in Taipei, Taiwan.

As a director-choreographer, some favorite credits include “Annie,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Footloose” and “Joseph...Dreamcoat,” among others. Selected as the winners of the inaugural short play festival off-Broadway at the Gene Frankel Theatre, Robbins saw the full-length play “Flight Risk” from conception to production, and that collaboration has resulted in other off-Broadway productions. They have a theatrical jazz dance company, DPRdance, which has performed at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC), Dixon Place, off-Broadway at TaDa!, Nazareth University and most recently at the annual Battery Dance Festival.

Robbins is a member of the Actors’ Equity Association and an associate member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC). They have a master’s degree in directing from The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University, where they graduated with honors and as a selected Fulbright candidate for Pace University.
