Biography

Daniel (Dan) Miller retired in 2024 from the Spencer-Van Etten School District in Spencer, New York, where he directed the high school concert band and choir, taught music theory and modern band classes, and served for 20 years as the district curriculum coordinator for music and art.

He was honored in 2018 with the Outstanding Jazz Educator Award from the National Band Association and in 2024 with a Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association. Each summer, he serves as a band director for the American Music Abroad Red Tour of Europe. He is also an instructor of saxophone at Binghamton University and SUNY Broome Community College. He regularly works as an adjudicator, guest conductor and clinician throughout New York State and Pennsylvania.

Miller received a bachelor of music education degree with performance honors from Syracuse University and a master of music education degree from Ithaca College. He has performed with ensembles ranging from the Syracuse Society for New Music and the Binghamton Philharmonic to the national tours of “Chicago” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” He has appeared as a soloist with the Syracuse University Symphony Orchestra, the Southern Tier Concert Band, the Ithaca Concert Band, the Harpur Jazz Ensemble and the Binghamton University Wind Symphony.

He is currently a member of the Southern Tier Concert Band, the Empire Saxophone Quartet, the Finger Lakes Saxophone Quartet and the commercial music group Rooster and the Roadhouse Horns. He freelances as a woodwind specialist on a regular basis.
