The Setnor School of Music offers four undergraduate minors. All of the programs are open to Syracuse University students from any degree program with the exception of music performance and private music study, which are not open to Setnor music majors.

Jazz and Commercial Music

The minor in jazz and commercial music is designed for students from any Syracuse University degree program, including music majors, who want to develop and improve their knowledge and skills in instrumental or vocal jazz.

This 18-credit program draws from the entire array of the jazz offerings in the Setnor School of Music, including jazz performing ensembles, jazz history, jazz arranging and theory, jazz applied lessons, and jazz education.

Application is encouraged before the beginning of sophomore year and is required before the beginning of junior year.

Music Industry

The 18-credit minor in music industry is designed for students from any Syracuse University degree program, including music majors, who wish to learn about the creative, business and legal aspects of the music industry.

Admission Requirements

The minor in music industry is highly competitive with a limited number of spaces. Application is required by the spring semester of sophomore year at the latest. To be considered for acceptance, students must apply to the coordinator of the music industry program, interview and possess a 3.3 GPA or better. The application process opens September 15 and closes March 15 during each academic year. Core curriculum music industry courses are restricted to majors and declared minors.

Music Performance

The minor in music performance is designed for students from any Syracuse University degree program on campus, except those in the Setnor School of Music, who want to perform in ensembles and improve their musical knowledge and skills.

This 18-credit program draws from the entire array of the Setnor School of Music’s ensemble offerings, running the gamut from such ensembles as the Syracuse University Symphony Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, Contemporary Music Ensemble and many more.

By completion of the minor, students will have had opportunities to perform in a varied assortment of ensembles, helping them to be capable of continued music making throughout their adult lives.

Private Music Study

The 18-credit minor in private music study is designed for students from any Syracuse University degree program, except those in the Setnor School of Music, who want to study music privately on guitar, drum set, piano or organ. Students who perform other instruments may petition to be accepted into the minor.

Application is encouraged before the beginning of second semester freshman year and is required before the beginning of sophomore year.
