Non-Music Major Opportunities

Not a music major but want to get involved? No sweat! There are plenty of opportunities for non-music majors to get involved with the Setnor School of Music.

Ensembles

The Setnor School of Music offers a variety of choral and instrumental ensembles open to students of all majors across Syracuse University and the neighboring SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Some ensembles require an audition, while others are open to all.

Classes

There are a number of classes available for beginning musicians or for those who wish to continue study.

  • Voice Class for Beginners (AMC 110) – Learn to sing. Voice instruction for the beginning student. Provides preparation for continued private lesson study. Two credits. Offered every semester.
  • Piano Class for Beginners (AMC 120) – Learn to play piano. Piano instruction for the beginning student. Provides preparation for continued private lesson study. Two credits. Offered every semester.
  • Guitar Class for Beginners (AMC 160) – Learn to play guitar. Guitar instruction for the beginning student. Provides preparation for continued private lesson study. Two credits. Offered every semester.
  • Introductory Music Theory I (MTC 125) – Elementary note reading, meter, intervals and diatonic harmony, including key signatures, major/minor scales, triads, seventh chords and accompanying chord symbols. For non-music majors only.
  • Introductory Music Theory II (MTC 126) – Harmonic and melodic minor scales, compound intervals, modes, C clefs, symmetrical scales, dynamics, harmonic series, instrument transpositions, form, cadences, and part writing. For non-music majors only.

Private Music Instruction

Private lessons with a faculty instructor are available for students (please note fees on the form). These lessons are intended for students who have some level of experience playing and can currently read music.

Change Your Major

Want to change your major to music? An assortment of music degree programs are available. An audition on your primary instrument will be required before admission can be considered.

Add a Minor

Interested in adding a music minor? We offer minors in jazz and commercial music, music industry, music performance, and private music study.
